The peace that comes into our hearts when we come to know Jesus is the walkway to being good, with intention, to others.
Good morning! I had a rather long blog nearly complete as I decided to hit the sack early last night. WordPress did not save it like it’s supposed to. So, I hope that enough of it is in my head to make sense this morning to you!
Luke 2:8-14 is the location of the most used passage about the birth of Christ:
“Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”
“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:
“Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!””
You might notice my translation is worded a little different. Same meaning. So, I wish to point out to you the statement made concerning peace. So, Jesus comes to Earth, born as a Baby. And the angels announce two things that will affect mankind because of it.
- Peace on Earth
- Good Will to Men
I tend to over analyze things and the first question that comes to mind is, “Why don’t we have peace on Earth?”
Well, first these are things that happen in the order they are spoken. Peace comes and
therefore, there is good will to men. And “Good will to men” simply mean that we will have an attitude that hopes the best for all people. We desire goodness for others. Something you know is not happening if you are paying attention. We live in a very selfish world where the thoughts are, “Me first!”
If Jesus brought Peace on Earth, where is it? Not only was that a violent time, but the violence around the world has only escalated since then. The wars and the crimes and the anger is worse than ever. So, where’s the peace?
If you are struggling to answer that question, I concur with you. With one very big exception. The peace that was brought to the world that night was not brought to the nations and the continents as we know them. It wasn’t brought to the world as a whole, it wasn’t meant to. It is a peace that is beyond understanding. Beyond what we can grasp and employ. Something man cannot do. You see, man can create peace in the world by stopping the fighting and the hatred. But what he cannot do is create peace in the heart.
Man is born into sin. And, believe it or not, that is the answer to almost every one of life’s difficulties. We have sickness because of sin. We have greed because of sin. We have bills because of sin. Yeah, my theology on that might need explaining, but I’m not going there because it would take a book to explain it all.
In short, the peace that Christ brought at his birth is not a physical peace you can see by everyone ceasing to fight. It’s a peace in the heart. And, that is the foundation to bringing good will to others. The peace that comes into our hearts when we come to know Jesus is the walkway to being good, with intention, to others. The Peace the angels sang of is in us. The good will is how we respond. Does that make sense to you?
And so, there IS Peace On Earth. And, as a result, there IS Good Will To Men!
